Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear
for auld lang syne -
we'll take a cup of kindness yet
for auld lang syne ...

Robert Burns

  1. Auld lang syne:
Carol showed me the YouTube Hong Kong 2015 New Yr celebration. The crowd sang
this Robert Burns poem translated into their language (same melody), but the
refrain was "Auld lang syne". My thought was, "Why did they choose to leave the
refrain un-translated (from English)?" Then it settled on me. "Auld lang syne"
is not English. It is universally an idiomatic saying, now. It changed the way
    I think of that song.

    1. it's a beautiful phrase that contains a lot that's hard to express succinctly in english -
